Hang in there, AMC. You’re a beacon & your work is important. Thanks for fighting the good fight.

Cancelled my recurring WaPo subscription a little while back. I'd like to see Alexandra Petri and Philip Bump land somewhere else.

Yes, the LAT and WaPo twin capitulations are shattering. And Substack is no more the answer than any other new media platform.

Unfortunately it appears that the US-X sees no need for funding mainstream journalism. The WaPo was a dead man walking as soon as Bezos purchased it, because his compass always points to what benefits him most financially.

There's a Substackization of media going on that I don't like at all. Sure, I've been doing the indie/DIY thing for 30 years and there's a place for it, but I don't want to live in a world where everything is an opinion newsletter and legacy media goes away.

I forget to check Patreon, so it would help me if you would post on Substack and/or Bluesky when you drop a podcast episode. But, if you don’t have time, that’s fine too. I just need to remember to check Patreon.

I get that people have issues with Substack, but there are great people here writing interesting stuff, and the features are good, so I think on balance Substack is a worthwhile platform. I don’t think that writers on substack need to be defensive about it.

I mourn the passing of WaPo too - at least that’s how I process it, even though it’s technically not dead - it feels like it to me.

I find myself alternately going into a rage (completely internal thing - nonviolent) and then a few hours later I have this great emotional distance, and I’m thinking that all of this shit which is happening is “very interesting”. I much prefer the latter state to the former.

I can so relate to what you wrote. I've blogged here and there for a long time (never a career), but I love the experience of sitting down to write a real op-ed that really tries to develop what I'm thinking into a coherent argument. I especially love the experience of working with a skilled editor who helps me say what I want to say in the best way that I can - or even helps me figure out what it is that I want to say in the first place!
