I fully appreciate your perspective on the holiday. I'm not being a scrooge but I'm not a sponge for things ordained by others as the way to celebrate.
We've tried paring down our holidays as much as possible -- I watched my late mother work herself almost literally to death at Thanksgiving and Christmas, trying to make a special time for her entire family. And that was an act of love on her part. But it also made the holidays immensely, paradoxically stressful. So we try to do as little travel as we can get away with. We keep it quiet. And I think we get a lot more joy from the big holidays as a result.
